The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is observed annually on October 1. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990 to promote awareness of aging issues, challenge negative stereotypes and stigma and also advocate for older persons' rights and dignity.



THEME

The 2024 theme for International Day of Older Persons is Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide".

 

This theme highlights the need for comprehensive healthcare, care, and social support services for older persons, particularly those with conditions like dementia.

 

OBJECTIVE:

The aim of celebrating the International Day of Older Persons is to:

1. Raise awareness about aging and older persons' contributions.

2. Promote healthy aging and well-being.

3. Address ageism and discrimination.

4. Support older persons' participation in society.

5. Encourage intergenerational dialogue.


STATISTICS:

- 1 billion+ people worldwide are aged 60+ (15% of global population).

- By 2050, this number will double.

- Older persons contribute significantly to economies, families, and communities.
